What you need to know about Wild Sustainability
About the Creator Behind Wild Sustainability
Wild Sustainability is currently a one-person team — me — the founder and content creator for Wild Sustainability. My name is Jacey Bonavia, and I am 32. I am a Midwestern girl — born and raised in a suburb of Milwaukee. Despite being Midwestern, my heart has always belonged in the Rocky Mountains. I live for hiking vacations with my family, and most of my favorite memories are of wildlife in Colorado, Montana, Idaho, and Alaska.
School Years
I excelled in school as a kid and received a scholarship to attend the University of Wisconsin – Madison. There I earned degrees in Anthropology and Classical Humanities and certificates (basically minors) in American Indian Studies and Archaeology. During college, I imagined I would be an archaeologist and even participated in digs in Wisconsin, Cyprus, and Turkey (at a big-name site, nonetheless). However, I noticed that archaeology strained the relationships of my mentors and decided that I could utilize my skills in museum work without me needing to travel for months for work every summer.
Early Career
Due to my love of the Rocky Mountains and my choice to pursue a career in museums, I moved to Colorado and attended graduate school at the University of Colorado – Boulder. I earned my master’s degree in Museum and Field Studies with a focus on archaeology collections. I worked in museums for about 8 years before I realized that my work was unsustainable for me. It could not financially support living expenses on the Front Range, and it did not align closely enough with my values to support my mental health.
Values
I value nothing more than my family, nature, social justice, mental health, compassion, honesty, and learning. In an attempt to become more aligned with my values (and have fewer expenses), I moved back to Wisconsin, where both of my parents still live and where I got a job in gun violence prevention activism.
Today
I now live in Brown Deer, Wisconsin, with my husband, Kyle; our dogs, Juniper and Copper; our cats, Miso and Baboon; and our composting worms, the Wigglers. At the time of this writing (updated November 2022), I am doing my best to live an eco-conscious life in our modest house and gardening in our outdoor space. I dream of one day having more land to practice gardening on a larger scale.
Now you know about me. Tell me about you! What brought you to this page?
About the Content On Wild Sustainability
The mission of Wild Sustainability is to share inspiring tips, information, resources, and solidarity for people of all ages worldwide seeking to live a more sustainable, eco-conscious life to promote human well-being, wildlife biodiversity, and environmental conservation. Thus I will provide several types of content.
I will share tips for reducing your footprint on the planet. For example, I will give you ideas for living zero waste (or, more accurately, low waste), reducing your water and energy use, recycling, composting, participating in community clean-ups, etc. I will share tips on sustaining your resilience, too, such as self-care routines.
I will also share information related to environmental topics. For example, I might share about the droughts, fires, rising water, and superstorms that result from global climate change. I might discuss marine or land-based conservation projects. I may share what you need to know about the chemicals in plastic. I will likely share information about fast fashion and animal agriculture.
I will help you magnify your impact by connecting with the larger population of eco-warriors, especially in your own community. This may look like sharing petitions, government bills and policies, templates of letters to businesses, etc. I will connect you with any resources I can to help you live more sustainably.
Eventually, I also hope to help by selling eco-friendly products, courses, and other content.
What type of content do you hope to see? What would keep you coming back for more?
